First, let's kill the sci-fi version of "AI"
When most cafe owners hear "AI upselling", they picture some kind of robot interrupting a customer with a pop-up ad. That's not what this is. What ZayPOS does is far more subtle — and far more effective.
AI upselling in ZayPOS means one thing: a quiet suggestion to your staff member, at the right moment, based on what the customer has actually bought before. That's it. No pop-ups. No customer-facing screens. No awkward automation. Just useful information for the person on the till.
💡 The key insight: A good barista already does this instinctively — "the usual?" or "want a pastry with that?" ZayPOS gives every staff member access to that same knowledge, even on their first shift.
How it actually works in ZayPOS
When a customer order is being built, ZayPOS checks two things simultaneously: what's currently in the cart, and what that customer has ordered in the past (if they're a loyalty member or returning customer). It then sends a prompt — not to the customer, but to the staff member on screen.
The prompt is deliberately low-key. Something like: "This customer usually adds oat milk" or "They often order a brownie with their americano." The staff member can add it, skip it, or ignore it entirely. There's no pressure, no automation, no action taken without a human in the loop.
What the AI is actually looking at
- Purchase history — what has this customer ordered on their last 5–10 visits?
- Current cart contents — what's already been added, so it doesn't suggest something they've already got
- Time of day — morning orders skew towards breakfast pairings; afternoon suggests afternoon tea pairings
- Popular combinations — products that are frequently bought together across all customers
A real example: The Corner Cafe, Bristol
Sarah, who runs a 6-table cafe in Bristol, told us she was sceptical. "I thought it would feel gimmicky. But within the first week I noticed my staff were upselling more — not because they were trying harder, but because they had the information they needed."
Her average order value increased by 11% in the first month. The most common upsell? Oat milk upgrades on flat whites — something her regular customers almost always said yes to once prompted, but her newer staff didn't know to ask about.
Across ZayPOS businesses using AI upsell prompts, the most effective suggestions are modifier upgrades (milk type, size) and complementary items under £2 — not full meals or expensive add-ons. Small, easy-to-say-yes-to suggestions convert best.
Does it feel pushy to customers?
No — because customers never see the AI prompt. They just see a staff member who happens to know they like oat milk. That feels like good service, not upselling. The distinction matters.
Compare this to the kind of upselling that does feel pushy: a screen in your face at the till asking "Would you like to add a muffin?" for the fourth time in a row regardless of whether you want one. That's algorithmic and transactional. ZayPOS's approach is conversational and human.
What kind of results should you expect?
We don't want to oversell this (pun intended). The results depend on your team, your menu, and how consistently staff use the prompts. That said, based on what we see across our customer base:
- Average order value typically increases by 7–15% when prompts are used consistently
- Modifier upsells (milk type, extras, size upgrades) see the highest acceptance rate
- New staff benefit most — it gives them the institutional knowledge that regular staff build up over months
- Results improve over time as more order history is built up for each customer
How to turn it on in ZayPOS
AI upselling is available on the Complete plan. Once you're on that plan, go to Settings → AI Features → Upsell Prompts and toggle it on. You can configure how many past orders to factor in, and set a minimum order count before suggestions appear (so brand new customers aren't guessed at).
That's it. No training required. Your staff will start seeing prompts on the order screen the same day.
