Clover vs ZayPOS for UK cafés & restaurants — honest 2026 comparison

Clover is good hardware sold to you by your bank or payment processor. It's also one of the most locked-in POS choices in the UK — locked to Clover terminals, locked to the reseller's payment rates, locked to whatever app marketplace coverage your reseller has paid for. ZayPOS runs in any browser on your existing iPad with the card processor of your choice. Here's the honest comparison.

TL;DR

Clover is well-built, reliable hardware with a mature app marketplace. If you bought it last year and it's working for you, there's no urgent reason to switch.

Three issues come up over and over from indie UK café owners we talk to: hardware lock-in (Clover terminals only, ~£400–£900 upfront per till), opaque reseller pricing (what you pay depends on which bank or PSP sold it to you), and support quality varies by reseller because Clover the company isn't who you actually deal with day-to-day.

ZayPOS Growth is £69/till/month flat, runs on the iPad you already have, with any UK card processor, and ships Natasha's Law + EHO compliance as core features that Clover doesn't have natively.

The lock-in question — three flavours

"Lock-in" is an overused word. With Clover it's specific: there are three independent ways you get locked, and they compound.

1. Hardware lock-in

Clover the platform is designed around Clover the hardware: Clover Station, Clover Mini, Clover Flex, Clover Solo. The POS app doesn't run on an iPad or a regular Android tablet — you buy the terminal. UK retail prices typically land between £400 and £900 per till for the hardware itself, before software subscription, before processing fees.

If a terminal breaks, your reseller sells you a new one. If you want to add a till for the holiday season, you buy another terminal. If you switch POS providers, the hardware you've already paid for becomes a paperweight (it's locked to Clover firmware).

ZayPOS runs in any modern browser. The iPad you already have today works this afternoon — no new hardware purchase, no firmware lock.

2. Payment-processor lock-in

This is the one that surprises operators most. Clover is sold in the UK by banks and payment processors as a bundle: Tide sells it bundled with Tide card processing, Lloyds Cardnet sells it with Cardnet processing, AIB MS with their processing, and so on. The Clover terminal you bought is locked to the processor that sold it to you.

If your processor's rates go up at renewal — and they often do — you can't shop around without throwing away the hardware. ZayPOS has no payment-processor relationship at all. We sell you the POS software; you pick whichever processor gives you the best rate this year, and switch whenever you like. Smart card routing inside ZayPOS handles whichever reader you plug in.

3. Reseller-as-support-channel

When something goes wrong with your Clover terminal, you don't call Clover the company — you call whichever bank or PSP resold it to you. Support quality, response times and depth of product knowledge vary enormously by reseller. Some are great. Many are slow and route you to a generic call centre that knows merchant onboarding but not POS troubleshooting.

ZayPOS support is direct — you email hello@zaypos.co.uk or call 01452 938906. Replies within 4 hours during UK business hours, from the team that builds the product.

Pricing — head to head, honestly

Clover pricing is hard to pin down because it varies by reseller. Public-facing UK Clover plans typically run:

On top of that: hardware (£400–£900 per till upfront, or financed over 24–48 months at higher total cost), plus card-processing fees set by your reseller, plus any apps from the Clover App Market (typically £5–£25/mo each). Most independent UK operators on Clover with a comparable feature stack to ZayPOS Growth end up paying around £162/month per location — counting amortised hardware — before card fees.

ZayPOS Growth: £69/till/month flat. Unlimited staff. No hardware purchase. No per-app fees. Card processor is your choice and your bill comes directly from the processor.

UK-specific compliance — the gap is similar to Square and Toast

Natasha's Law

Clover doesn't include a built-in Natasha's Law allergen matrix or a PPDS label printer. The Clover App Market has a few food-safety apps, but coverage varies and most are US-focused. UK Clover users typically pay £25–60/month for a dedicated UK compliance tool (Navitas Safe Food Pro, Trail, Erudus) on top of their Clover bill. ZayPOS Complete ships the allergen matrix, AI-assisted detection and printable PPDS labels as a core feature.

EHO/SFBB compliance

Clover doesn't track temperature logs, daily cleaning checklists, allergen records, or supplier records natively. The Clover App Market has some hospitality compliance apps but, again, mostly US-focused. ZayPOS Complete includes a one-click Food Inspector Pack covering everything an EHO will ask for in a Food Hygiene Rating inspection.

UK VAT

Clover's reporting is decent but doesn't break VAT down for the UK's particularly messy regime (20% hot, 0% cold takeaway, mixed-order apportionment). ZayPOS Complete includes weekly/monthly VAT summaries (gross-to-net with input VAT tracked from supplier invoices) ready for your accountant.

Where Clover genuinely wins

When ZayPOS is the right choice over Clover

How to switch from Clover in 24 hours

  1. Export your Clover menu. Clover Dashboard → Inventory → Export to CSV.
  2. Email it to hello@zaypos.co.uk. Mention you're switching from Clover. Tell us which reseller sold you Clover (helps us understand which card processor you're tied to today).
  3. We import overnight. Items, categories, modifiers, prices, descriptions — all migrated. Preview ready next morning.
  4. You confirm. Usually 15–30 minutes of review.
  5. Pick your UK card processor. Keep using Clover-via-your-reseller if you must (smart routing supports it), or move to Dojo, SumUp or Square for lower fees — ZayPOS doesn't care which.
  6. Go live. On the iPad you already have, not on Clover hardware. Most cafés finish onboarding in a single afternoon.

We rebuild your menu for you — up to 200 items included on every plan, larger menus quoted at £149. You approve the rebuilt menu before going live. No commitment. The Clover hardware you've already paid for stays useful for processing on its own terms while you wind it down.

The switching risk — reversed

Switching POS feels risky — particularly when it means writing off hardware. We've made it as low-risk as we can:

60-day save-5-hours guarantee

Try ZayPOS for 60 days from your first paid charge. If you don't save at least 5 hours a week on rotas, supplier-invoice keying, EHO logbooks and Natasha's Law allergen updates — combined — we refund every penny.

Combined with the 14-day free trial (no card needed) and the done-for-you Clover menu rebuild (up to 200 items included), the worst case is: you keep using Clover, you're out zero pounds, and you've spent 20 minutes evaluating an alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Clover hardware with ZayPOS?

Not directly — Clover terminals run locked-down Clover firmware. But you can use the Clover card reader (just the payments side) with ZayPOS running on a separate iPad. Smart card routing supports Clover, Dojo, SumUp and Square readers side by side.

What if I'm mid-contract with my Clover reseller?

You can still use ZayPOS for the POS layer while honouring the existing payment-processing contract via Clover's card reader. Many of our customers run this way for 6–18 months until the processing contract is up for renewal, then drop the Clover side entirely.

Does ZayPOS have a Clover App Market equivalent?

Not yet — our integrations are direct, not an open marketplace. We cover the big UK-relevant ones (Xero, QuickBooks, Mailchimp, Brevo, HMRC RTI for payroll). If you have a specific Clover app you can't live without, email us and we'll tell you honestly whether we have it or whether it's on the roadmap.

Will switching hurt my card processing rates?

Often it helps. Bundled-reseller rates on Clover are typically 1.4%–2.2% for card-present transactions. Picking your own UK processor (SumUp from 0.99%, Dojo and Square negotiable in the 1.0%–1.4% range) usually saves money on a £15k/month-card-volume café.

What about my existing Clover loyalty programme / gift cards?

Customer data is exportable from Clover. Loyalty migration into ZayPOS's CRM happens during menu migration. Gift card balance migration is a manual step we'll walk you through — usually a one-off afternoon.

14-day free trial. No card needed. No hardware needed.
